The conviction of Derek Chauvin is worthy of celebration. It also shows the capitalist class’s desire to rein in police, but that threatens to open up a huge crisis as the cops will bitterly resist. From their inception, the origins of the police was to defend slavery and put down workers’ struggles. In the US’s hyperviolent society, the police here are even more violent than in many other countries, yet it is exactly that level of general violence that leads some workers to feel dependent on the police.
- What does the future hold for the struggle in the US?
- How can it move forward and is the George Floyd Police Reform Act a way forward?
- What program and strategy can be developed that can appeal to a section of the working class?
- How can links be made with similar struggles worldwide?
