A DSA meeting: Lots of whooping and hollering, no discussion on the serious threat of Trump

DSA and other socialists should stop ignoring Trump’s threats to steal the midterm elections. The more they ignore this threat, the more they leave running room for Trump’s Nazi-friendly opponents like Tucker Carlson.

Let’s review the situation:

Trump even told CNN they shouldn’t cover his U.N. speech

Trump’s latest threat was implied in his U.N. speech. In that speech he threatened Iran with annihilation. While he has hesitated to actually carry that out to the fullest, he did make clear his commitment to defeat Iran. In that context, he said that Iran is: “waiting to see how I do in the midterm election….I gave absolutely no credence and will not give credence to the election when it comes to Iran. It doesn’t even enter my mind.”

But he must have a pliant congress to carry on with his (and Netanyahu’s) war. That means Republican control of both houses of congress, which seems increasingly unlikely come next January. There is only one conclusion we can draw from this: He must try to steal the election. He is preparing to attempt exactly that.

Recently, Trump was given a setback when the Supreme Court upheld the injunction against his scheme to control mail in voting. That was only a partial set-back because the court ignored the fact that the postal service had been secretly violating the injunction. They let his postal service get away with it. That means that the postal service may feel free do it again or find other ways to create chaos with vote by mail.

Trump also has other plans up his sleeve. One of them is to deploy ICE agents to polling places. These agents are acting like a paramilitary terrorist group already. DHS now has $183 billion in resources according to the Brennan Center. According to Wired.com, they are using part of that money to open up 150 new offices around the country. DHS secretary Markwayne Mullin has already said that ICE agents will be deployed at polling places.

Another part of his plan involves the use of hundreds of election deniers who are now on the boards that run elections and count the votes. This threat combines with the fact that House speaker Mike Johnson can appoint a new clerk of the House who would be subservient to him and Trump. Such a clerk could use any confusion created by the election deniers to refuse to recognize election results. See this NY Times article to understand how it could be done.

None of this is certain. The opposition to Trump could be so overwhelming that it makes it impossible. But whether he succeeds or not is almost secondary. He will create confusion and chaos, which is the main point.

The number one beneficiary of any Trump-led election theft attempts will be Tucker Carlson and other Nazi/Putin friendly forces on the far right. They bitterly oppose Trump already. Let’s be clear on who they are. In his interview with “Professor Jiang”, Carlson said: “Of course, the white populations are killed on purpose. And the question is, why? And I don’t have the faintest idea, and there’s a lot of speculation as to who’s doing it. I’ll just say bluntly: I don’t mean I know who the instruments are, of course. But Keir Starmer is not in charge of Great Britain. Macron is not in charge of France. I’m not sure how many leaders really do have control of their countries. I don’t know how many countries actually have sovereignty. I really don’t know the answer. Something is going on…. There’s no such thing as multiculturalism. There’s always a dominant culture that, you know, that insists on dominance. Of course, I just don’t think there’s ever been anyone who thought this could happen globally, like a systematic targeting of a race for elimination globally. Well, it wasn’t possible until pretty recently, but it would be interesting to know what the plan is. There’s clearly, like a plan behind that. There’s a plan. I wonder, how many Americans do you think understand what’s actually happening in the world right now?” (Jiang did not disagree with Carlson.)

This is a dog whistle for “the international Jewish conspiracy is manipulating the white Christians and are taking over the world,” in other words, the “white replacement theory.”

Carlson is now a bitter opponent of Trump because of Trump’s closeness to the head of “the Jewish state”, Netanyahu. Carlson will lead an opposition to any attempt by Trump to steal the upcoming election. He will be joined by former Republican congressman Thomas Massie, who made headlines when he campaigned to release the Epstein files. Let’s be clear on who Massie is. Until he leaves office Massie’s chief of staff is Matt Gurtler, who was associated with neo-Nazi and KKK supporter Chester Doles.

Shared platform with “progressive” Democrats
“Progressive” Democrats like Ro Khanna and Bernie Sanders will be happy to join them on speaking on stage against Trump’s election theft. They have already on issues like the Epstein files and AI. That’s because, liberals that they are, they take each issue seperately, rather than trying to build an independent movement of the working class. Such a movement is impossible if it has any connection to racist, ethno and Christian nationalists like Tucker Carlson, Thomas Massie or Steve Bannon.

Trump’s election theft will probably be supported by Netanyahu. That will be used as “evidence” that Israel (read: “the Jews) is behind this theft. Even wings of the far left – especially many in the Palestine rights movement — will parrot this claim. By doing so, they will add momentum to Trump’s Nazi-friendly opponents, thereby further inhibiting any united working class movement.

What is the alternative?

The alternative is an independent movement that unites all workers. The one force capable of building such a movement is the unions. They are throttled by a conservative and cowardly leadership. That’s why socialists must step into the vacuum.

DSA
The socialists that matter most are DSA. So far, they have studiously avoided the threat of a stolen election. One excuse making the rounds among some in DSA is that if we talk about Trump’s plans that only makes Trump stronger. That is insane. These plans are very real. Warning of them is not some

Trump is planning a government sponsored version of January 6. Nobody in his administration will hold him back this time. There is no knowing how far he’ll be able to go, but he and the far right will benefit from the chaos and confusion he creates.

distraction. It is the first step towards mobilizing to stop him. There are two real reasons why DSA is not saying anything :

A serious attempt by a U.S. president to overturn the election would be a momentous break from all of US history since the Civil War. As social democrats (at best), they cannot conceive of such a break.

is that they then would have to propose what to do to stop him. Second is that however much they might try to avoid it, that would lead back to the role of the labor movement and its leadership, but much of DSA is in the pocket of that leadership.

Serious, independent-minded working class-oriented socialists in DSA should start taking up the issue now so that we can be out ahead of the Nazi-friendly opposition to Trump. They should call on DSA to organize public meetings on this issue now. They should demand that all DSA-supported candidates for office immediately raise this danger and use their campaigns to organize against it. The main strategy should be to organize mass work stoppages to stop Trump’s planned theft. That necessarily means building a campaign within the unions and challenging the union leadership.

Again: Nobody knows exactly what will happen during and after the elections. Even Trump doesn’t know. But to ignore this serious threat is the height of foolishness. Only Trump and his Nazi-friendly opponents will benefit by socialists ignoring it.
