Report from inside Aleppo

War map of Aleppo as of today

Oaklandsocialist read an important report from inside Aleppo and we reposted it here. We did that after requesting permission and receiving no response. Since then, we were asked to remove it and we are complying. The report is extremely important and we summarize it below:

There is still a danger and a fear of snipers as well as air strikes.

As is the case in nearly all war situations, there are serious problems with weapon related crimes and also theft, etc.

It seems that serious care is being taken not to victimize Syrian Christians.

The situation for Muslims in the city of Aleppo is more complex. Although HTS is apparently mainly waving the flag of the revolution, there is still some question as to whether they will try to impose a dress code on women. For example, there have been reported incidents of a woman being told “politely” to put a scarf on her head. But while it might be seen as a polite request, when the requester is carrying a rifle, the request can seem to be something more than that.

The conflict between Syrian Arabs and the Kurdish “Syrian Democratic Force” (SDF) is extremely serious with killings of civilians by both the SDF and the National Army. Contrary to the views of some on the left in the US, who see the SDF as ideologically and politically pure, there seems to be justification for the view that at least in party they are carrying on a purely nationalist war which also includes repression against Syria
Arabs.

There is even talk about Aleppo residents-in-exile returning to the city. That would be a huge step forward as it would indicate a serious weakening if not the fall of the brutal Assad regime.

    • for sure. I always say “if you wanted an easy life, you shouldn’t have been born,” to which I guess we could add “if you wanted a simple life, you shouldn’t have been born”!

  1. This must be the most useful thing I’ve read on the situation anywhere so far. Many thanks for this.
