It is amazing how quickly the media focus shifts. Just a few hours ago it was all Trump assassination attempt all the time. Now it’s “all Trump classified documents case thrown out by judge Aileen Cannon”. Trump, naturally, is combining the two. “As we move forward in Uniting our Nation after the horrific events on Saturday, this dismissal of the Lawless Indictment in Florida should be just the first step, followed quickly by the dismissal of ALL the Witch Hunts…. Election Interference conspiracy against Joe Biden’s Political Opponent, ME. Let us come together to END all Weaponization of our Justice System, and Make America Great Again!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.   

Trump is buttressed by his peanut gallery. For example, his Republican candidate for Pennsylvania senator, David McCormick, wrote in the Wall St. Journal “The assassin was a threat to democracy. Mr. Trump is democracy in action.” Not to be outdone, Allysia Finlay, member of the editorial board of the Wall St. Journal, blamed Biden for the assassination attempt. She wrote: “Rather than unify the country, Mr. Biden has deepened America’s divisions by escalating attacks on Mr. Trump and his supporters with demagoguery, policies and even prosecutions.” The success they are having is demonstrated by the fact that a Trump endorsed gofundme account for the families of those Trump supporters who were wounded or killed in the assassination attempt has, as of this writing, raised $3.6 million!

Biden
Biden is playing into their game. In response to the attempt on Trump’s life, he commented “We’re neighbors.  We’re friends, coworkers, citizens.  And, most importantly, we are fellow Americans.  And we must stand together.… the America we must be, an American democracy where arguments are made in good faith…” As if the MAGA crowd treats those who disagree with them as “fellow Americans” and as if anything that Trump and the MAGA crowd says and does is in good faith. As if “uniting the nation” as Trump puts it means anything other than complete and total domination by Trump and his cult – the MAGA crowd.

Supreme Court
As for the MAGA Supreme court: Nothing the non-MAGA (in)Justices say in their rulings matters. The “partisan hacks” (in the words of (in)Justice Amy Coney Barrett) have their political agenda and they are going to follow it. All that matters is power. Where was the rule of law then?

lynched in the South? Where was the rule of law during the Tulsa Massacre? Where was the rule of law when striking workers and their families were machine gunned down in the Ludlow Massacre? Of what good was the rule of law when 50% of the population (women) were denied the right to vote. In actual fact, change comes about through mobilizing power. That’s what the civil rights movement and the labor movement before it showed. If Sotomayor, Jackson and Kagan wanted to do anything more than maintain a false hope in the MAGA Supreme Court, they’d be crisscrossing the country, speaking out against these corrupt (in)Justices. They’d be pulling the covers off of them. The same with Jack Smith and his attorneys. The same, in fact for the Democrats in congress. When they testified under oath before the Senate in their confirmation hearings, every single one of the MAGA (in)Justices claimed they believed that how the Supreme Court had ruled in the past set precedents that they would follow. In case after case, they have reversed this precedent. That means that all six of these (in)Justices have lied under oath and should be brought up under criminal charges. But we hear not a whisper of this from the Democrats.

That is because the Democrats are more dedicated to maintaining stability than anything else. Ever the victim, Trump will now beat them at their own game. He will pretend that he is the one standing for stability and unity. And so he is – the stability and unity of total domination. And so it is that he will most likely return to the White House.

Again: What is needed is for workers and youth to organize from below, completely outside of the NGO’s, the union bureaucracy and, yes, the disastrously deluded majority of the socialist movement, and build committees of resistance, first to stop MAGA and then to build a political alternative to both MAGA and the Democrats. 

Update: Since this was written, there is a new news cycle: Trump has announced that his pick for VP is J.D. Vance. Vance is the most extreme of the potential choices, so he may cost Trump some votes, but he has the one indispensible quality – he will do what Pence refused to do which is overturn an election. By making this choice, Trump is saying that he’s confident he’ll win so whether his VP wins additional votes or not doesn’t matter. This is in line with Roberts’s presidential immunity decision, which amounted to a declaration that he no longer cared if the Supreme Court was seen as being impartial because he was confident that Trump would become the next president and together they’d be able to jam any policies they like down people’s throats.
