“The truth is that in the area of our homeland… now lives a large population of Palestinians. We do not want to rule over them. We do not want to run their lives. We do not want to force our flag and our culture on them. In my vision of peace there are two free people living side by side in this small land, with good neighborly relations and mutual respect, each with its flag, anthem and government, with neither one threatening its neighbor’s security and existence…. A strong Palestinian government will strengthen peace.”
Guess who said this.
Bibi Netanyahu in 2009

A friend of mine and I were speculating on the degree to which Netanyahu actually believes what he says vs. his being just a pure narcissistic opportunist and demagogue of the Donald Trump mould. (Trump, don’t forget, at one time advocated for abortion rights and as far as his support for the Christian evangelicalism: he is about as religious as is the computer monitor which you are now watching.) In any case, here is a hint as to what Netanyahu really believes. Among other things, it shows how “two state” advocates can easily flip. It also shows the reality of where a two state solution would actually end up – not “two states living in peace” but bitter hatred and constant conflict between two hostile ethno-nationalist states. It would be a lot more like the separation between Pakistan and India than anything else. But we don’t need to worry about that because the settlements – which are expanding as you read this – make a Palestinian state in the West Bank impossible, even if we were to accept the idea of a religious/ethno-nationalist state in the first place.
In our view, internationalism and socialism is the only practical solution. To those who say it is a pipe dream, we say what else is realistic?
