“I’m really rich”

Donald Trump displaying his supposed net wealth in 2015

I’m really rich. I have total net worth of $8.73bn. I’m not doing that to brag. I’m doing that to show that’s the kind of thinking our country needs.” So said Donald Trump in 2015. One irony is that many workers support him exactly for that reason. Now the bill is coming due for is nearly $500 million bond. That should be a piddling little amount for this supposed multi, multi billionaire. But he can’t come up with this amount and no bonding company will front for him. The conclusion? Either he had net assets of $8.37 billion in 2015 and was such a stupid investor that he lost nearly all of it in 9 years, or he never had anywhere near that amount of wealth. It’s a sign of how widely capitalist propaganda has penetrated into the US consciousness that millions would support him because of his supposed wealth, but either way, “everybody loves a winner” as they say and now his image of impregnable power could be about to burst, and this could lead to his downfall. Not his appeals to bigotry. Not his stupidity. Not his attempt to overthrow an election by force. Not his apparent start of Alzheimers. But the fact that he’s nowhere near as rich as he’s claimed! Sometimes I think that history has a sense of humor and that sense of humor is based on irony.
